What is the appeals process required by the DSA?
Questions & Answer
The DSA requires platforms to give users a clear and fair appeals process whenever content or accounts are restricted.
After receiving a statement of reasons, users must have an accessible way to challenge the decision.
The process must:
Be easy to find and use, ideally built into the platform interface.
Provide a timely response (within a reasonable period defined by regulators).
Be free of charge to the user.
Allow escalation to out-of-court dispute resolution bodies if internal appeals fail.
Platforms must keep records of appeals and outcomes, both for transparency reporting and for regulatory review. The goal is to ensure that moderation decisions are not final without user input, protecting freedom of expression and reducing errors.
