What is AI content moderation?
AI content moderation is the automated review of user-generated content to find material that breaks a platform's rules or the law. Models scan text, images, video and audio as they are posted, score how likely each item is to be harmful, and route it accordingly. Clear cases are actioned automatically and borderline ones go to a person or to a more capable model. It is how platforms moderate at volume without reading everything by hand.
-
How accurate is automated content moderation?
Accuracy depends on the harm. Visual harms such as nudity and graphic violence are detected reliably by pre-trained models. Nuanced harms such as coded harassment or grooming need models tuned to your community's language. Checkstep runs a mix and sets a confidence threshold for each policy, so high-confidence detections are actioned automatically and uncertain ones are escalated rather than guessed. Star Stable saw around a 50% improvement in accuracy after launch.
-
How long does it take to implement Checkstep?
The minimum integration is a single API call: send a piece of content, receive a decision. That can be running in days. Most platforms then spend a few weeks configuring policies, confidence thresholds and moderator queues to match how they already work. Checkstep does not store your content, and media is accessed by link through delegated access, which removes much of the data-protection review that usually slows this kind of project down.
-
Does Checkstep replace human moderators?
No. It changes what they spend their time on. Automation clears the high-volume, obvious cases so your team handles the decisions that need judgment. Some review has to stay human by law: appeals under the Digital Services Act must be reviewed by a person, and child sexual abuse material must be human-reviewed and reported. Most in-house teams using Checkstep are five people or fewer, focused on tuning policy and auditing decisions rather than routine review.
-
What content types and languages does Checkstep support?
Checkstep moderates text, images, video and audio, and assesses them together rather than separately, so it catches harm that only appears when an image and its caption are read as one. It processes 100+ languages natively and supports any other language through translation. Detection covers self-harm, adult content, violence, spam, harassment, terrorism, child sexual abuse material, personal data and intellectual property, and new categories can be added.
-
How does Checkstep support DSA and OSA compliance?
The Digital Services Act (DSA) in the EU and the Online Safety Act (OSA) in the UK both require you to tell users which rule their content broke, offer an appeal reviewed by a human, and report on what you removed. Checkstep records the violated policy on every enforcement, runs the appeal workflow, files statements of reasons to the EU DSA database automatically, and produces the transparency reporting. Policies and thresholds can differ by jurisdiction.
